關於電影和配樂：
《燃情歲月》以博大的胸懷、精深的意境與高超的技法，譜寫出一曲人性化的西部史詩。它沒有金戈鐵馬卻有超然氣魄，沒有刀槍不入但有血有肉，沒有肝膽義氣更有情真意切。它的時間跨度大，場景宏偉古樸，構圖美輪美奐。更使人驚訝的是，雖然主要劇情都發生在西部群山環繞中，但絕對沒有局限在特定環境和局部條框的小氣與拘束，它所表現的精神境界能引發世界性的共鳴與普遍認同，是難得的宏揚世間真情、盎然生機、天人合一的優秀作品。雖然略顯拖沓的劇情引起部份觀眾不滿，但只要耐心品味，超然灑脫、精雕細琢的意境更令人回味無窮。
配樂大師詹姆斯霍納為本片編寫的主題音樂，可稱得上是配樂典範。這是詹姆斯霍納與導演愛德華斯韋茲的第二次合作，比他們合作的上一部作品《光榮》（Glory）更為成功。他緊密圍繞傳奇主題與劇情發展，創作出飄逸寫意結合恢弘磅礴、委婉抒情略帶悲愴哀怨、如幻如真而虛實結合的旋律，令人陶醉、使人動情。某些資深樂評人甚至稱是精彩配樂挽救了這部冗長的電影。其實這應該是感謝導演的地方，導演把片子拍的這樣冗長煽情，讓詹姆斯·霍納在音樂上可以為所欲為，大書特書，居然寫出了我認為詹姆斯·霍納的作品中最無懈可擊的作品，音樂支支動聽，每一個主題旋律都美的不像話。
詹姆斯·霍納在音樂中精彩的運用了日本洞簫這項音色十分古老蕭瑟，深隧蒼茫的樂器，來塑造主角「傳說」般不可捉摸，狂野悲憤卻又渾然天成的形象，時而狂放不羈，時而飄忽不定，時而吶喊悲嗚，時而沈吟低語，可以說是詹姆斯·霍納這種手法最令人印象深刻的一次表現。全片的音樂出現的各個主題，從恬靜淡雅到悲憤感慨，旋律上無不精雕細琢，唯美動人，交織出一篇又一篇悠然神往，扣人心弦的樂章，即使是track 4、5、這兩段描寫戰爭的音樂，戰鼓如雲，干戈交迫，氣勢悲壯磅薄，但在旋律性的表現上依然可圈可點，無可挑剔。日本洞簫獨特音色的脈動與呼吸，加上管弦音樂細致唯美的深情款款，揮灑出一頁無垠原始的無情荒地有情天，只怕導演真正想要表達卻力有未逮的，反而讓詹姆斯·霍納真正的刻劃了出來。track 11、13、中結合了女聲凄美飄渺的吟詠，傾訴遙遠原始的哀怨與蒼涼，演唱者的音質似幻似真，如泣如訴，再次為本片下了傳神的詮釋。
《燃情歲月》的導演為這部影片做了兩個明智的選擇，一是選擇布萊德·彼德演出崔斯頓這個角色，讓布萊德獨特的氣質來掩飾劇情的薄弱簡單，只是《燃情歲月》並不算獨具慧眼，先前不已有《大河戀》和《夜訪吸血鬼》也同樣的將布萊德做類似的塑造，只是若非布萊德，這個不自然的角色就無法這么自圓其說。第二個明智的選擇當然是選擇詹姆斯·霍納擔任配樂，精湛的演出彌補了影片的空洞，甚至在音樂的催化下，化空白為留白，化冗長為餘韻，化刻意為寫意，化矯情為深情，這張原聲帶也是少數幾張不論我介紹給誰，誰都很喜歡的作品，也成功的證明了，電影配樂的確可以不只是電影配樂。
